plasticfarm:

X-O Manowar variant cover - process.

1 - Rough thumbnails. I sent only the non-greyed out ones. The greyed out ones were just bad. These are seriously the thumbnails I sent to Valiant. I have the best and most understanding editors in the world. Here is how I described each thumbnail:

  • 1-Just a head shot of X-O, holding up a pint as if saying cheers. Simple and ties in with the 1-pager.
  • 2-X-O in a spider alien bar, looking uncomfortable. Kind of ties in to the 1-pager.
  • 3-The most ridiculous one. X-O at a waffle house eating sketchy breakfast food being served by spider aliens. (Current design spider aliens as the cook, 90’s design as customers.)

We chose #2, which was indeed the best choice. I may still draw #3 for my own amusement someday.

2- Pencils. I made myself a template showing how much space the title takes up, so I don’t put anything important in that area. The barcode placement jumps around depending on the design of the cover, but I purposely left space in the lower right hand corner.

3- Inks. Not much to say about this. Note that I didn’t ink the bricks all the way to the top of the page. Book titles on Valiant books tend to fully cover that area, so any linework would just be getting covered up anyway.

4- Colors. I moved my signature out of the way from where I figured the barcode would go. (A few years ago I changed the way that I signed my name on artwork in order to make my name legible. I wanted people to be able to know the name of the guy who drew the thing they were looking at. I still autograph books using my old signature, which is different than how I sign checks or paperwork.) Also, since this was a Beyond Comics store variant, I changed the Mets shirt to a Beyond Comics one in Photoshop. Someday I might do a “how I color” post, which will be interesting as my coloring method is pretty dumb.

5 - Here is how the cover turned out with all the trade dress applied. Thanks to Valiant Podcast for the photo.

All in all, this was one of the most fun projects I’ve worked on. Reaction seems to be pretty positive for both this cover and the one pager Justin and I did on the inside of the book. Keep an eye out for Harbinger #25 which has a 5-page story by me and Mr. Jordan, and some other stuff after that.
